Quenya is the Tolkien-created language whose name is associated with the speech of the Elves.
Tolkien developed Quenya as part of his invented linguistic history for Middle-earth. It is one of the major Elvish languages and is based in part on features Tolkien admired in Finnish, Latin, and Greek. Within the fictional history, Quenya was associated especially with the High Elves and the ancient realm of Valinor.
Quenya appears in names, poems, songs, and formal expressions throughout Tolkien’s writings. The phrase “Namárië,” Galadriel’s farewell song, is one of the best-known extended examples. Tolkien treated language as a central creative element, building vocabulary, grammar, and historical relationships rather than inventing isolated words.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language and is more commonly spoken by Elves in Third Age stories. Adûnaic is associated with Númenor, while Khuzdul is the language of the Dwarves.
