Which fictional language did J.R.R. Tolkien create for the Elves of Valinor?

The story behind the answer

The fictional language J.R.R. Tolkien created for the Elves of Valinor is Quenya.

Quenya is one of Tolkien’s Elvish languages and is strongly associated with the High Elves, including the Noldor and Vanyar. In Tolkien’s imagined history, it developed in Valinor before some Elves returned to Middle-earth. It therefore carries a formal, ancient, and ceremonial status in many stories.

Tolkien based much of Quenya’s sound and structure on his knowledge of real languages, especially Finnish, while also drawing on other linguistic influences. He did not merely invent isolated words; he developed grammar, sound patterns, and historical relationships among his languages.

Sindarin is a different Elvish language, associated especially with the Sindar and widely used in Middle-earth during the Third Age. Khuzdul is the language of the Dwarves, and the Black Speech is associated with Sauron. These distinctions are important because Tolkien’s world contains several related but separate languages.
