Which fictional Hogwarts house does Harry Potter join in J.K. Rowling’s series?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter joins Gryffindor in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

The Sorting Hat places Harry in Gryffindor during the welcoming feast in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Gryffindor is one of Hogwarts’ four student houses, alongside Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own dormitories, common room, traditions, and Quidditch team.

Harry’s closest friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, are also sorted into Gryffindor. Their house becomes the main setting for the trio’s school friendships and many of their confrontations with danger. Gryffindor’s associated animal is the lion, and its colors are scarlet and gold.

The Sorting Hat considers a student’s qualities and, in Harry’s case, his preference matters as well. Harry fears Slytherin because of its association with Lord Voldemort, but the Hat ultimately sends him to Gryffindor. The house is commonly linked with courage, though its members display a range of traits.
