Which fictional forest is home to Treebeard in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

Fangorn Forest is home to Treebeard in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Fangorn lies on the eastern side of the Misty Mountains, near Isengard and Rohan. It is an ancient woodland inhabited by Ents, tree-like beings who shepherd and protect the forests. Treebeard, whose Sindarin name is Fangorn, is the oldest of the Ents encountered by the story’s characters.

Merry and Pippin meet Treebeard after escaping from the Orcs who captured them. Their conversation helps awaken the Ents to Saruman’s destruction of the surrounding trees. The Ents subsequently march on Isengard, one of the major turning points in the War of the Ring.

Fangorn is distinct from Mirkwood, the great forest east of the Misty Mountains, and from Lothlórien, the woodland realm of Galadriel and Celeborn. The Old Forest is another separate woodland, located near the Shire and associated with Old Man Willow.
