Tengwar is the fictional elvish script J.R.R. Tolkien designed for writing many languages.
Tolkien created Tengwar as a writing system rather than as a language. Its letters, called tengwa, are arranged in a structured system based mainly on consonant sounds, with vowel marks called tehtar used in many writing modes. The script can represent languages including Quenya, Sindarin, and the Common Speech.
Readers sometimes confuse Tengwar with Cirth. Cirth is a separate runic script associated especially with the Dwarves, although other peoples also use it. Tengwar appears in Tolkien’s illustrations and in the inscriptions associated with his legendarium, including the writing on the One Ring in the Black Speech of Mordor.
