Which fictional country is ruled by Queen Jadis in C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia?

The story behind the answer

Queen Jadis rules the fictional world of Charn in C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia.

Charn appears in The Magician’s Nephew, the Narnia book that explains the creation of the world and the origins of the White Witch. It is an ancient, lifeless world whose final queen is Jadis. She destroys Charn by using the Deplorable Word, a catastrophic act that ends all life there.

Jadis reaches the newly created Narnia after Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer accidentally bring her into the new world. The character later becomes known in Narnia as the White Witch, though The Magician’s Nephew presents her earlier history.

Charn is distinct from Narnian locations such as Archenland, Calormen, and Telmar. Those countries belong to Narnia’s wider geography, whereas Charn is a separate world connected to Narnia through magical travel.
