Denethor ruled Minas Tirith in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Minas Tirith is the chief city of Gondor and the seat of its ruling Stewards during the story. Built in seven concentric levels on the side of Mount Mindolluin, the city is protected by walls and a prominent white tower. Its name means “Tower of Guard” in Sindarin.
Denethor II is the ruling Steward of Gondor when the events of The Lord of the Rings take place. He governs from the White Tower and receives news from across the kingdom, although his use of the palantír deepens his despair and distorts his judgment.
Minas Tirith is sometimes confused with Minas Morgul, its former counterpart and enemy stronghold. Osgiliath was Gondor’s old capital, positioned on the Anduin, while Edoras was the capital of Rohan. The city’s defense against Sauron’s forces forms one of the major military episodes in The Return of the King.
