Farmer Giles is the title character of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Farmer Giles of Ham.
The comic fantasy story was first published in 1949. Its protagonist is Giles, a farmer living in the fictional English setting of Ham. After an accidental encounter with a giant, Giles becomes celebrated as a dragon-slayer and is drawn into adventures that parody heroic legends and the behavior of medieval rulers.
The work is separate from Middle-earth and does not feature Bilbo Baggins, Beren, or Tom Bombadil. Tolkien’s interest in language and mock-medieval storytelling is evident in its names, tone, and invented history. The title can mislead readers who know Tolkien mainly through The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, because Farmer Giles of Ham is a standalone humorous tale rather than part of those narratives.
