Which federal body coordinates the United States’ 250th-anniversary observance known as America250?

The story behind the answer

The United States Semiquincentennial Commission coordinates the federal observance known as America250.

Congress created the commission through the United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act of 2016. Its role is to promote and coordinate celebrations of the 250th anniversary of American independence, working with federal agencies, states, cities, historical organizations, and private partners.

The commission is a congressional, nonpartisan body. Its work covers more than a single parade or ceremony: it includes nationwide programming, historical education, commemorative coins and stamps, partnerships with leading cities, and recommendations concerning anniversary events.

The commission should not be confused with the America250 Foundation, which serves as its private nonprofit partner and service provider. It is also distinct from earlier anniversary bodies, such as the United States Bicentennial Commission, which organized the 1976 celebration. The commission uses the America250 identity for its public-facing work.
