For America250, where did the First Continental Congress meet in Philadelphia?
Answer
Carpenters’ Hall
Answer
Carpenters’ Hall
The First Continental Congress met at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia. Delegates gathered there from September 5 to October 26, 1774, to coordinate a colonial response to British policies and the punitive laws known as the Intolerable Acts.
Twelve of the thirteen colonies sent delegates; Georgia did not participate in this first gathering. The delegates discussed colonial rights, agreed to boycott British goods, and created the Continental Association to enforce that boycott. Their meeting marked an important step toward intercolonial cooperation.
Carpenters’ Hall can be confused with Independence Hall, where the Second Continental Congress later met and where the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Carpenters’ Hall was associated with the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia, whose members built and maintained structures in the colonial city.
