For America250, which British general surrendered at the Battle of Saratoga?
Answer
John Burgoyne
Answer
John Burgoyne
British general John Burgoyne surrendered at the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777. His army capitulated to American forces commanded by General Horatio Gates after the Battles of Freeman’s Farm and Bemis Heights in New York.
Burgoyne had led a British campaign south from Canada, intending to control the Hudson River valley and separate New England from the other colonies. The plan depended on support from other British forces, but those forces did not join him as expected. American resistance and difficult supply conditions left Burgoyne increasingly isolated.
The American victory was a major turning point because it helped persuade France to enter the war openly as an American ally. Burgoyne’s surrender is distinct from Charles Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown in 1781, which came later and involved a different British army.
