Which famous philosopher tutored Alexander the Great?

The story behind the answer

The famous philosopher who tutored Alexander the Great was Aristotle.

Aristotle was invited by Philip II of Macedon to educate his son Alexander, probably beginning around 343 or 342 BC, when Alexander was about thirteen. The lessons took place at Mieza, near the Macedonian capital of Pella, in a setting associated with the sanctuary and gardens of the Nymphs.

Alexander’s education likely included ethics, politics, rhetoric, literature, and natural philosophy. Aristotle also introduced him to Greek literary culture, and later tradition says he prepared an annotated copy of Homer’s Iliad for the prince. Other young Macedonian nobles, including future generals and rulers, may have studied alongside Alexander.

Aristotle’s direct tutoring probably lasted only a few years. By about age sixteen, Alexander had returned to Pella and was serving as regent while Philip campaigned. Aristotle later returned to Athens and founded the Lyceum. Plato, Socrates, and Pythagoras were hugely influential philosophers, but none was Alexander’s tutor: Socrates died before Alexander was born, and Plato was already dead when Aristotle took the role.
