Which family name is associated with Fidelity Investments, founded by Edward C. Johnson II in 1946?

The story behind the answer

The Johnson family name is associated with Fidelity Investments, founded by Edward C. Johnson II in 1946.

Edward C. Johnson II created Fidelity Management & Research after taking control of a mutual-fund business in Boston. His son, Edward C. “Ned” Johnson III, joined the company in 1957 and later transformed it through expansion into brokerage, retirement services, technology, and online investing. Abigail Johnson, Ned’s daughter, became chief executive in 2014 and chair in 2016.

Fidelity is privately held and remains strongly identified with the Johnson family, unlike many major publicly traded financial firms. Its history includes the Fidelity Magellan Fund, which Peter Lynch managed from 1977 to 1990 and made famous through strong long-term returns.

Do not confuse the family with Fidelity’s investment managers: the Johnsons own and lead the company, while individual portfolio managers have changed over time.
