Which family controls the German manufacturer Faber-Castell, founded in 1761?

The story behind the answer

The Faber-Castell family controls the German manufacturer Faber-Castell, founded in 1761.

Kaspar Faber began the business as a pencil maker in Stein, near Nuremberg. His descendants expanded production, and the company adopted the Faber-Castell name in 1900 after Alexander von Faber married into the Castell-Rüdenhausen family and received the title Count of Castell-Rüdenhausen.

Faber-Castell became famous for pencils, colored pencils, pens and artist materials. It claims to be one of the world’s oldest industrial companies and one of the oldest family-run companies still operating under its founding family’s ownership.

The company is not the same as Stabilo or Staedtler, two other German stationery brands. Faber-Castell’s distinctive green pencils and castle logo reflect its own long history and the family name created through the 1900 marriage.
