The family name identifying the Indian conglomerate founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1868 is Tata.
Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata established the trading firm that became the Tata Group in Bombay in 1868. The group later expanded into steel, hotels, automobiles, chemicals, information technology, and consumer products. Its landmark early ventures included the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, opened in 1903, and Tata Steel, established in 1907.
Tata Sons is the principal holding company of the group. The charitable Tata Trusts have historically held a majority stake in Tata Sons, which is why the group is often described as philanthropic as well as family-founded. Ratan Tata, who led the group from 1991 to 2012 and again as interim chairman in 2016–17, was Jamsetji Tata's great-great-grandnephew.
A common mix-up is confusing Tata Group with Tata Motors alone. Tata Motors is one company within the much larger group, alongside Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Consumer Products, and other businesses.
