The Yanai family is associated with Fast Retailing, the Japanese parent company of Uniqlo.
Fast Retailing developed from a men’s clothing shop opened by Hitoshi Yanai in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in 1949. His son, Tadashi Yanai, joined the business and became the central figure in transforming it into an international retail group.
The company opened its first Uniqlo store in Hiroshima in 1984. Uniqlo became Fast Retailing’s best-known brand through its focus on relatively simple, functional casual clothing and large-scale international expansion. Fast Retailing is headquartered in Tokyo and is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
A common mix-up is treating Uniqlo and Fast Retailing as identical names. Uniqlo is the group’s flagship clothing brand, while Fast Retailing is the corporate parent. The group also operates or has operated brands including GU, Theory and Helmut Lang. Tadashi Yanai has served as Fast Retailing’s founder-associated chairman, president and chief executive, making the Yanai name closely connected with the company’s ownership and leadership.
