The Gallo family founded E. & J. Gallo Winery in Modesto, California, in 1933, shortly after Prohibition ended in the United States.
Brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo started the winery using limited resources and focused on producing and marketing affordable wine. Ernest became associated especially with sales and marketing, while Julio concentrated on winemaking and production. Their division of responsibilities helped the young company expand rapidly.
The initials in the company name refer to the two founders: Ernest and Julio. A common mistake is to identify the winery with Robert Mondavi, another important California wine figure, or with a famous wine region rather than the founding family.
E. & J. Gallo Winery grew into one of the world’s largest family-owned wineries. The company’s portfolio has included many brands and wine styles, while the Gallo family has continued to play a major role in its ownership and management.
