The Murdoch family controls News Corp, the media company created when Rupert Murdoch split his businesses in 2013.
Rupert Murdoch built an international media empire from newspaper acquisitions, beginning with control of Adelaide’s News Limited in the 1950s. His holdings expanded to include newspapers, book publishing, television, and film. In 2013, the publicly traded News Corporation was divided into two companies: News Corp for publishing and related assets, and 21st Century Fox for entertainment.
The Murdoch family’s control is exercised through voting shares and family governance arrangements. News Corp owns assets including Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, and HarperCollins. It should not be confused with Fox Corporation, the separate company formed after Disney acquired much of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment business.
