Which family controls the Indian tractor and utility-vehicle company Mahindra & Mahindra, founded in 1945?

The story behind the answer

The Mahindra family name identifies the Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra, founded in 1945.

The business was established in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers Jagdish Chandra Mahindra and Kailash Chandra Mahindra, together with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. The company initially traded steel before moving into vehicle assembly and manufacturing. After the 1947 Partition, Ghulam Muhammad left for Pakistan, and the company became Mahindra & Mahindra.

Mahindra & Mahindra became a major manufacturer of utility vehicles and tractors. Its wider Mahindra Group later developed interests in technology, finance, hospitality, aerospace, and other sectors. Anand Mahindra, a member of the founding family, became a prominent public face of the group and served as chairman.

The company is not the same as Tata Motors or Bajaj Auto, although all are major Indian industrial groups. “Mahindra” can also refer specifically to the vehicle and tractor company, while “Mahindra Group” describes the broader collection of businesses.
