The Newhouse family controls Advance Publications, the American media company founded by Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr.
Samuel Irving Newhouse Sr. acquired the Staten Island Advance in 1922 and used it as the foundation for a growing publishing business. His sons, Samuel Irving Newhouse Jr. and Donald Newhouse, later expanded the company substantially.
Advance Publications has owned newspapers, magazines, digital media and other businesses. It is also the parent company associated with Condé Nast, whose publications have included Vogue, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. The company’s private ownership has allowed the family to maintain long-term control.
Advance is not the same as the publicly traded New York Times Company, whose controlling family is the Sulzberger family. The similar newspaper backgrounds can make those two media dynasties easy to mix up.
