Which exchange was formed in 2007 by merging Indonesia’s Jakarta Stock Exchange and Surabaya Stock Exchange?
Answer
Indonesia Stock Exchange
Answer
Indonesia Stock Exchange
The Indonesia Stock Exchange was formed in 2007 by merging the Jakarta Stock Exchange and Surabaya Stock Exchange.
Indonesia had two major securities exchanges before the merger. The Jakarta Stock Exchange was the country’s principal equities venue, while the Surabaya Stock Exchange operated as a separate exchange with its own history and market functions. Their consolidation created a single national exchange, known in English as the Indonesia Stock Exchange and abbreviated IDX.
The merger was completed in 2007, and the unified exchange is headquartered in Jakarta. IDX operates Indonesia’s securities markets and provides listing and trading infrastructure for Indonesian companies and investors.
The exchange’s name can be confused with the Jakarta Composite Index. The index is a market indicator tracking listed shares, whereas IDX is the exchange organization itself. The merger also differs from later changes to Indonesia’s index families and trading rules, which did not create a new national exchange.
