Which exchange operates the Swiss Market Index, Switzerland’s leading share index?

The story behind the answer

SIX Swiss Exchange operates the Swiss Market Index, Switzerland’s leading share index.

The SIX Swiss Exchange is Switzerland’s principal stock exchange and is part of SIX Group. Its listed markets include equities, bonds, exchange-traded funds, structured products, and other securities. The exchange’s main trading platform is based in Zurich.

The Swiss Market Index, or SMI, was introduced in 1988. It tracks the largest and most liquid shares listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and is widely used as a snapshot of the Swiss equity market.

SIX Swiss Exchange is the market venue, while SIX Group is the broader financial infrastructure company that owns and operates several exchanges and post-trade businesses. That distinction explains why the index is associated with the exchange but not named simply “SIX Group.”
