Which exchange operates the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s equities market?

The story behind the answer

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange operates South Africa’s principal equities market.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange, abbreviated JSE, is based in Sandton, Johannesburg. It provides markets for equities, bonds, financial derivatives, commodity derivatives, and other instruments, making it a broad financial-market operator rather than only a share-trading venue.

Gold discoveries on the Witwatersrand helped drive the creation of a formal securities market in Johannesburg. The JSE began trading in 1887, during the rapid development of South Africa’s gold-mining industry.

The exchange’s best-known benchmark is the FTSE/JSE All-Share Index. The JSE should not be confused with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s former futures businesses or with the separate Cape Town Stock Exchange, which serves smaller and growing companies.
