Which exchange operates the Hang Seng Index’s underlying Hong Kong equities market?

The story behind the answer

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange operates Hong Kong’s main equities market, where many companies underlying the Hang Seng Index are listed and traded. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, usually called HKEX.

Hong Kong’s organized securities market developed through several historical associations and exchanges. The modern exchange structure emerged from consolidation during the 20th century, followed by demutualization and the creation of HKEX in 2000.

The Hang Seng Index should not be confused with the exchange. It is a market index, while the Hong Kong Stock Exchange is the trading venue. Hong Kong’s market is also distinct from mainland China’s Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges, despite strong financial links.
