Singapore Exchange was formed in 1999 through the merger of the Stock Exchange of Singapore and the Singapore International Monetary Exchange.
The Stock Exchange of Singapore handled equities, while the Singapore International Monetary Exchange, commonly known as SIMEX, was a major derivatives marketplace. Their combination created a broader exchange group offering both securities and derivatives trading.
Singapore Exchange, usually abbreviated SGX, began operations in December 1999. It became one of Asia’s prominent international financial-market operators, supported by Singapore’s role as a regional banking, trade, and investment center.
SGX operates the Singapore stock market and a substantial derivatives business. Its main equity index is the Straits Times Index, which tracks selected leading companies listed in Singapore. A common mix-up is calling SGX only a stock exchange; its activities also include derivatives and related market infrastructure.
