Which exchange operates India’s Nifty 50 benchmark index?

The story behind the answer

The National Stock Exchange of India operates India’s Nifty 50 benchmark index.

The Nifty 50 tracks 50 large, liquid companies listed on the National Stock Exchange, commonly abbreviated as NSE. It is one of India’s most widely followed equity-market indicators and is used by investors, funds, and financial news organizations.

The NSE was incorporated in 1992 and began operations in the mid-1990s, introducing screen-based electronic trading to India’s securities market. Its benchmark was originally known as the S&P CNX Nifty before being renamed the Nifty 50.

A common mix-up is confusing the NSE with the Bombay Stock Exchange, or BSE. The BSE operates the Sensex, another major Indian stock index, while the Nifty 50 is associated with the NSE. Both exchanges list many of India’s leading companies, but they are separate marketplaces and use different benchmark indexes.
