Which exchange opened the ChiNext market for innovative companies in 2009?

The story behind the answer

The Shenzhen Stock Exchange opened the ChiNext market for innovative companies in 2009.

ChiNext was launched on 30 October 2009 as a growth-oriented board within the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. It was designed to provide financing and a public listing venue for innovative, entrepreneurial, and high-growth businesses, including technology companies.

The board became an important part of China’s multi-level capital-market system. Its companies are listed and traded under rules administered through the Shenzhen exchange, so ChiNext is not a separate stock exchange in the way that Shanghai or Hong Kong is.

ChiNext is often compared with growth markets elsewhere, but it has its own Chinese regulatory framework and listing standards. Shenzhen’s other major market segments include the Main Board and the SME-related market that preceded later reforms.
