Which exchange is South Korea’s sole securities market operator, headquartered in Busan?
Answer
Korea Exchange
Answer
Korea Exchange
South Korea’s sole securities market operator, headquartered in Busan, is the Korea Exchange.
The Korea Exchange, commonly abbreviated KRX, was established in 2005 through the integration of several markets, including the Korea Stock Exchange, the Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations market, and the Korea Futures Exchange. This created one national platform for equities, bonds, derivatives, and other listed products.
Although KRX’s headquarters are in Busan, its Seoul offices remain important, particularly for securities-market operations and investor services. This can cause confusion because Seoul is South Korea’s main financial centre, while Busan is the exchange’s legal headquarters.
KRX operates the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets. KOSPI is associated with large and established Korean companies, while KOSDAQ is especially associated with smaller and technology-oriented businesses. The exchange also provides derivatives markets and market data used by investors worldwide.
