Which European country is completely landlocked between Switzerland and Austria?

The story behind the answer

The European country completely landlocked between Switzerland and Austria is Liechtenstein.

Liechtenstein lies in the Upper Rhine valley of the Alps. Switzerland borders it to the west, south, and part of the north, while Austria borders it to the east and northeast. The Rhine forms the country’s entire western boundary, but Liechtenstein has no coastline and no direct route to the sea.

It is especially notable because it is doubly landlocked: both of its neighboring countries are themselves landlocked. Only one other sovereign state, Uzbekistan, shares that distinction. Liechtenstein is also one of Europe’s microstates, covering roughly 160 square kilometres, with Vaduz as its capital.

The principality was formed in 1719 and became fully independent when the German Confederation dissolved in 1866. German is its official language, and the Swiss franc is its currency through a customs and monetary union with Switzerland. The country’s Alpine setting often causes it to be confused with nearby Swiss or Austrian territory, but Liechtenstein is an independent state.
