Which European capital stands on the River Liffey?

The story behind the answer

Dublin is the European capital that stands on the River Liffey.

The Liffey flows through the centre of Dublin before entering Dublin Bay. The river divides the city into north and south sides, and bridges including Ha'penny Bridge, Millennium Bridge and O'Connell Bridge connect the two parts.

Dublin developed around a Viking settlement founded near the mouth of the Liffey in the 9th century. The city's name comes from the Irish Dubh Linn, meaning “black pool,” while the modern Irish name is Baile Átha Cliath.

The Liffey is sometimes confused with the River Dodder, another important Dublin waterway. The Dodder joins the Liffey in the city's south, while the Tolka flows into Dublin Bay farther north. Dublin has been Ireland's capital since the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922.
