Which European capital is home to the Palace on the Isle in Łazienki Park, completed in the 18th century?

The story behind the answer

Warsaw is the European capital home to the Palace on the Isle in Łazienki Park, completed in the 18th century.

The building began as a bathing pavilion for Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski in the late 17th century. King Stanisław August transformed it into a neoclassical palace between 1764 and 1795, working with architects including Domenico Merlini and Jan Chrystian Kamsetzer. Its name comes from its setting on an artificial island surrounded by a lake.

The palace formed the centerpiece of the king’s Łazienki complex, which also included gardens, pavilions, a theatre, and monuments. Its interiors contained paintings and sculpture from the royal collection, reflecting the monarch’s interest in the arts and Enlightenment culture.

The Palace on the Isle suffered serious damage during the Second World War, when German forces prepared it for destruction, but it was not fully blown up. Postwar conservation restored much of the building. It is now part of the Royal Łazienki Museum, while the surrounding park remains one of Warsaw’s best-known green spaces.
