Which European capital contains Sarajevo City Hall, rebuilt and reopened in 2014 after wartime destruction?

The story behind the answer

Sarajevo is the European capital containing Sarajevo City Hall, rebuilt and reopened in 2014 after wartime destruction.

Known locally as Vijećnica, the building was designed in a pseudo-Moorish style during Austro-Hungarian rule. Construction began in the 1890s, and the building opened in 1896. Its colorful façade, arches, and ornate interior made it one of Sarajevo’s most distinctive public buildings.

Vijećnica served as Sarajevo’s city hall before becoming the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the siege of Sarajevo in August 1992, shelling caused a fire that destroyed much of the library’s collection, including many rare books and manuscripts. The building itself was severely damaged.

International support helped fund a long restoration. Sarajevo City Hall officially reopened in May 2014, marking the centenary year of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand nearby. It is now used for cultural events, exhibitions, and official ceremonies. It should not be confused with the nearby Latin Bridge, a separate landmark already associated with the assassination site.
