Vilnius is the European capital known for its medieval Old Town and Gothic St. Anne’s Church.
Vilnius Old Town is one of the largest surviving medieval old towns in Northern and Eastern Europe. Its streets contain Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical buildings, reflecting the city’s changing political and cultural history.
St. Anne’s Church is one of the capital’s best-known landmarks. Built mainly in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, it is celebrated for its elaborate Flamboyant Gothic brickwork. The church stands near the Bernardine Church and Monastery in the historic centre.
Vilnius became the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later remained the capital of modern Lithuania. Its Old Town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. Riga and Tallinn also have famous Baltic old towns, but St. Anne’s Church is especially associated with Vilnius.
