Which European capital is home to the Palace of Culture and Science, completed in 1955?

The story behind the answer

Warsaw is the European capital home to the Palace of Culture and Science, completed in 1955.

The Palace of Culture and Science is a monumental skyscraper in central Warsaw. The Soviet Union presented it to Poland, and construction took place from 1952 to 1955. Its architecture combines socialist-realist ideas with forms inspired by historic Polish and Soviet buildings.

At more than 230 meters including its spire, it remains one of Poland’s most recognizable structures. The building contains theaters, museums, offices, conference spaces, and an observation terrace. Its size and political origin have made it both a landmark and a subject of public debate.

Warsaw was heavily destroyed during the Second World War and was rebuilt afterward. The palace therefore stands within a cityscape shaped by both postwar reconstruction and older surviving or reconstructed historic districts.
