Oslo is the European capital home to the Munch Museum, which houses versions of Edvard Munch’s The Scream.
Edvard Munch was born in 1863 in Kristiania, the city now called Oslo. The Munch Museum holds a large collection of his works, including paintings, prints, drawings, and personal objects. Its current building, Munch, opened at Bjørvika in 2021.
The Scream is not a single object: Munch created several versions in different media. The best-known painted versions are held by the National Museum of Norway and the Munch Museum, while the museum also holds related works and versions of the composition.
Munch’s image of a figure on a bridge against a swirling sky became an emblem of modern anxiety. The Oslo museum’s collection is especially important because Munch bequeathed much of his art to the city after his death in 1944.
