Riga is the European capital home to the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, whose historic building opened in 1863.
The opera house stands beside the city’s canal in central Riga. The building was designed by Ludwig Bohnstedt and originally served as the Riga German Theatre. Its opening reflected Riga’s growing importance as a cultural and commercial center in the nineteenth century.
After Latvia became independent in 1918, the institution developed into the Latvian National Opera. It later became the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, presenting opera, ballet, and concerts. The building has undergone several renovations while retaining its historic exterior and grand auditorium.
Riga’s cultural identity is broader than its opera house. The city’s historic center is known for medieval architecture and an exceptional collection of Art Nouveau buildings. The opera should also not be confused with Estonia’s national opera in Tallinn, which is associated with the Estonia Theatre.
