Vienna is the European capital centered on the historic Ringstrasse boulevard.
The Ringstrasse forms a broad circular boulevard around Vienna’s historic inner city. It follows the route of former city fortifications, which Emperor Franz Joseph ordered demolished in the nineteenth century. The redevelopment created space for grand public buildings, parks, and cultural institutions.
Important buildings along the Ringstrasse include the Vienna State Opera, Parliament, the Burgtheater, the Rathaus, and the University of Vienna. Because of this concentration of monumental architecture, the boulevard is closely associated with Vienna’s imperial-era urban identity.
The Ringstrasse should not be confused with the Gürtel, another major Viennese road farther from the center. Vienna is also known for classical music, Habsburg history, coffeehouse culture, and the Schönbrunn Palace, which lies outside the Ringstrasse loop.
