The Newborn monument, unveiled on Kosovo’s independence day in 2008, stands in Pristina, the capital of Kosovo.
The monument consists of large block letters spelling “NEWBORN.” It was designed by Fisnik Ismaili and unveiled on 17 February 2008, the day Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. The letters were initially painted bright yellow and later became a changing public-art surface covered with different colors, patterns, and messages.
Newborn quickly became one of Pristina’s best-known symbols. Its changing appearance has allowed artists and the public to connect the monument with political themes, anniversaries, and social campaigns. The installation is near the Palace of Youth and Sports in central Pristina.
The monument’s name is usually written as one word, reflecting the lettering itself. Kosovo’s declaration remains politically disputed by Serbia and several countries, but the monument’s date and location are firmly associated with Pristina’s public landscape.
