Zagreb is the European capital containing the Museum of Broken Relationships, founded there in 2006.
The museum began as a traveling exhibition created by artists Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić after the end of their relationship. It displays donated objects connected with broken relationships, accompanied by short, often anonymous explanations. The objects range from ordinary household items to unusual personal souvenirs.
After touring internationally, the collection found a permanent home in Zagreb’s Upper Town. The museum’s unusual concept combines personal memory, humor, grief, and social history. Its appeal comes from the way everyday objects can represent an entire relationship without requiring a conventional portrait or biography.
Zagreb is Croatia’s capital and largest city, situated on the Sava River near the Medvednica mountain. Visitors sometimes confuse the museum’s origin with its touring exhibitions, but the permanent museum is located in Zagreb.
