Which estate near Tula was Leo Tolstoy’s birthplace and lifelong home?

The story behind the answer

Yasnaya Polyana was Leo Tolstoy’s birthplace and lifelong home.

Yasnaya Polyana, meaning “Bright Glade,” is an estate about 12 kilometres southwest of Tula in Russia. Tolstoy was born there in 1828 and spent much of his life connected with the property. He wrote major works there, including War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

The estate belonged to Tolstoy’s family and became closely linked with his literary identity. Its landscape, household, peasants, school, and family history influenced his observations of Russian society. Tolstoy was buried in the estate’s Forest of the Old Order, near a ravine associated with a childhood story.

Yasnaya Polyana is now a museum complex and cultural site. It is not the same place as Moscow’s Tolstoy House Museum, where he lived during his final years in the capital. The estate remains one of the most important literary landmarks in Russia.
