The first appearance of the Weeping Angels is in the Doctor Who episode “Blink.” The 2007 episode introduces the Angels as statue-like creatures that can move only when they are unobserved.
Written by Steven Moffat and directed by Hettie Macdonald, “Blink” follows Sally Sparrow, who discovers messages from the Doctor hidden in old DVDs. The Tenth Doctor is trapped in 1969 after the Angels seize the TARDIS, while Sally remains in 2007 and must piece together his instructions.
“Blink” is often remembered as a Doctor-lite episode because David Tennant and Martha Jones appear only briefly. The story instead centres on Sally, Larry Nightingale, and the unsettling time-travel mechanics of the Angels. It was first broadcast on 9 June 2007 and became one of the programme’s most acclaimed episodes.
The Angels later returned in “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Stone,” followed by “The Angels Take Manhattan.” Those stories are sequels or later appearances, not the creatures’ debut.
