Which Doctor was played by Tom Baker?

The story behind the answer

Tom Baker played the Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who. He took over from Jon Pertwee and portrayed the Doctor from 1974 to 1981, beginning with “Robot” and ending with “Logopolis.”

Baker’s Doctor became one of the programme’s most recognisable incarnations. His eccentric costume, enormous striped scarf, curly hair and fondness for Jelly Babies helped define the character, while his era ranged from gothic horror stories to space opera and historical adventures. His regular companions included Sarah Jane Smith, Leela, K9, Romana and, later, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan.

A common mix-up is confusing Tom Baker with Colin Baker, who played the Sixth Doctor, or Peter Davison, who followed Baker as the Fifth Doctor. Tom Baker’s seven-season tenure remains the longest continuous television run by an actor as the Doctor. The character’s regeneration into the Fifth Doctor occurs at the end of “Logopolis,” when Baker’s Doctor falls from the Pharos Project transmitter and regenerates into Peter Davison’s incarnation.
