Who played the Twelfth Doctor's companion Clara Oswald?

The story behind the answer

Jenna Coleman played Clara Oswald, the companion who travelled with the Twelfth Doctor. Coleman first appeared in Doctor Who in 2012 and continued as Clara through the Twelfth Doctor’s era, portrayed by Peter Capaldi.

Clara was introduced as a mystery: Coleman initially appeared as different versions of apparently unrelated characters, including Oswin Oswald and Victorian governess Clara Oswin Oswald. “The Name of the Doctor” revealed that these versions were echoes of the same woman, scattered through the Doctor’s timeline to save him from the Great Intelligence. The Clara who became the Doctor’s regular companion was a modern-day schoolteacher.

Coleman’s Clara also travelled with Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor before witnessing his regeneration into Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor. Viewers sometimes confuse her with other modern companions: Karen Gillan played Amy Pond, Billie Piper played Rose Tyler, and Freema Agyeman played Martha Jones. Coleman later returned briefly as Clara in the 2017 Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time.”
