Which entrepreneur was the first woman to join the original Dragons' Den panel?

The story behind the answer

Rachel Elnaugh was the first woman to join the original Dragons' Den panel.

Elnaugh was one of the original investors when the British edition launched in 2005. She became known for her direct questioning of entrepreneurs and for bringing experience from the gift and lifestyle-products sector to the panel.

Before appearing on television, Elnaugh co-founded Red Letter Days, a company selling experience gifts. The business became a prominent example of a fast-growing consumer brand, although it later encountered financial difficulties and entered administration. That business history is part of the reason Elnaugh's Dragons' Den role is often discussed alongside her entrepreneurial career.

Rachel Elnaugh should not be confused with Deborah Meaden, who joined the programme later and became one of its longest-serving female investors. Elnaugh's distinction concerns the original panel and the show's launch period.
