Which entrepreneur was the first female Dragon on the UK television series Dragons’ Den?

The story behind the answer

Rachel Elnaugh was the first female Dragon on the UK television series Dragons’ Den.

Elnaugh joined the programme when it began in 2005 and appeared as one of the original investors. She was known in the Den for her experience in retail and branding, particularly through the Red Letter Days gift-experience business.

Elnaugh’s tenure lasted through the early series before she left the regular panel. Deborah Meaden later became one of the programme’s best-known female investors, but she was not the first woman to occupy a Dragon’s chair. Kelly Hoppen and Sara Davies joined much later.

The UK programme has since featured several female Dragons, including Meaden, Hoppen, Jenny Campbell and Tej Lalvani’s fellow investors in later series. Elnaugh’s place in the show’s history is specifically tied to being its inaugural female Dragon.
