Alan Sugar founded Amstrad and became the lead Dragon on the UK series Dragon's Den.
Alan Sugar founded Amstrad in 1968, initially developing and selling consumer electronics. The company became known for products including audio equipment, computers and satellite television hardware. “Amstrad” was formed from the name Alan Michael Sugar Trading, linking the brand directly to its founder.
Sugar became the lead investor on Dragon's Den when the programme developed its later panel structure. His reputation came from building a substantial electronics business and from his direct, sometimes forceful approach to evaluating proposals. He also became widely known through The Apprentice in the UK, where he served as the employer figure.
Peter Jones and Duncan Bannatyne were other major Dragon's Den investors, but neither founded Amstrad. Nick Jenkins joined the panel much later and is associated with online retail rather than Amstrad's electronics history.
