Which English university college elected C.S. Lewis as a fellow in 1925?
Answer
Magdalen College, Oxford
Answer
Magdalen College, Oxford
Magdalen College, Oxford, elected C.S. Lewis as a fellow in 1925.
Lewis had studied at University College, Oxford, and later worked as an Oxford tutor. His fellowship at Magdalen began the long academic period in which he taught English literature, developed his scholarly reputation, and wrote many of his major books.
Magdalen College is one of Oxford’s constituent colleges and was founded in the fifteenth century. Lewis lived and worked there for many years, and his Oxford friendships included J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, and Owen Barfield. These writers were associated with the informal literary group known as the Inklings.
Lewis left Oxford for Cambridge in 1954, when he became the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The similarly named Magdalen and Magdalene colleges are therefore easy to confuse, but his Oxford fellowship was at Magdalen College.
