Which English king ruled during Joan of Arc’s trial in 1431?
Answer
Henry VI
Answer
Henry VI
Henry VI was the English king during Joan of Arc’s trial in 1431.
Henry VI succeeded his father, Henry V, in 1422 while still an infant. During Joan’s lifetime, England supported his claim to the French crown under the terms of the Treaty of Troyes. Henry was therefore the rival monarch to Charles VII, whom Joan supported.
Henry VI did not personally conduct Joan’s trial. The proceedings were organized by church officials in territory controlled by the English, and the English authorities strongly supported the case against her. Henry was crowned king of England in 1429, while Charles VII was crowned king of France at Reims that same year.
