Which English city is traditionally identified as Blackbeard’s birthplace?

The story behind the answer

Bristol is traditionally identified as the birthplace of Blackbeard.

Blackbeard was born Edward Teach, or possibly Edward Thatch, and historians generally place his birth in Bristol, England. The exact date of his birth is uncertain, but he was probably born around 1680. Bristol was a major port with strong links to Atlantic trade, naval service, and privateering.

Teach later crossed the Atlantic and became active in the Caribbean and along the North American coast. His early life is poorly documented, so historians cannot reconstruct a complete biography before his appearance in pirate records.

Bristol’s connection with Blackbeard is sometimes confused with the places where he operated or died. He was killed near Ocracoke Island in present-day North Carolina in 1718, not in England. The city’s maritime history nevertheless makes the traditional birthplace association plausible and widely cited.
