Salisbury Cathedral has the United Kingdom's tallest church spire, completed in 1320 and reaching 123 metres.

The cathedral was built at New Sarum, now Salisbury, after the bishop and cathedral community moved from Old Sarum. Construction of the main body began in 1220, and the building was consecrated in 1258. The spire and tower were added later, creating the landmark that dominates the surrounding plain.

Its unusually rapid medieval construction gives Salisbury a notably coherent Early English Gothic appearance. The tower and spire added enormous weight to the building, so medieval and modern engineers have had to monitor and strengthen the structure.

The cathedral also preserves one of the four surviving original copies of Magna Carta from 1215. That manuscript is separate from the architectural record, but it is one reason Salisbury Cathedral attracts visitors interested in both medieval architecture and English constitutional history.
